First 30 days
Register Temporary Accommodation
PendingWithin 24 hours of moving into a dwelling, foreign nationals must register temporary residence with the local police station (PSB). Hotels register guests automatically; private rentals must be registered in person by the landlord or tenant. The registration form is later required for bank and residence-permit steps.
Open a Local Bank Account
PendingForeigners can open a local RMB bank account with a valid passport and visa/residence permit. As of late 2024, account-opening for foreigners has been streamlined (PBOC Notice No. 298, 2024), and several cities publish English guides.
Apply for a Residence Permit (Z visa holder)
PendingAfter entering China on a Z visa, apply for a residence permit at the local PSB Exit-Entry Administration within 30 days. The permit typically covers the work contract period and removes the need for repeated visas.
Set up WeChat Pay and Alipay
PendingWeChat Pay and Alipay are essential for daily payments in China. Both require a Chinese mainland debit card linked to a local phone number registered in your name. Set them up after opening a bank account.
